Jessica Balyck - an autark woman

What brings you the most joy in your life?

Creating. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about from a young age. The process of bringing an idea to fruition and then seeing clients and stylists bring that design to life is a deeply fulfilling experience.

How are you embracing a slower pace / approach in your life now?

I’m enjoying it so far. I think it’s been wonderful to slow down and prioritise what’s really important and having the pressures of fast paced life removed, enabling me time to create, restructure and focus on a lot of things I was wanting to do for my business and recreationally.

What does responsible /sustainable fashion mean to you?

To me it’s making ethical choices throughout my business of what you as a person and as a brand want to contribute to the world on a larger scale as a whole. Individually these choices can impact the larger picture and even if we start small though collectively that’s when we will initiate change.

Share some sustainable choices that you make in your life and why you feel this is important? I try to practice what I preach when it comes to sustainable choices. I consciously purchase, meaning I buy less though I invest in quality pieces to hold onto.

Regarding the Balyck brand I’ve ensured that everything is sustainably made from process, product to packaging.

What does supporting Australian designers + fashion mean to you?

It personally means a lot. I’m a huge advocate of championing Australian fashion, Production and supporting local businesses. I want to push and see the integration of more Australian brands into the international market to be further recognised on a global scale.

What is your favourite piece in your wardrobe and what is the story behind it?

It would have to be one of my first classic Chanel bags I purchased over 13 years ago. Its quality is still pristine due to the craftsmanship, it’s still on trend and it reminds me that if you purchase less and well your items will last and withstand trends.

Lastly, your favourite autark piece?

What makes autark unique as a label? Oh I love too many pieces. The enduring sky cotton set, Tier and Batwing dresses are beautiful. Autark is unique due to the timeless design and quality that goes into the craftsmanship of these wonderful creations.
